Floating Lives: Documentary Films from Contemporary China
Presented by the WEAI Program in Contemporary Culture and Arts of East Asia

Lu Xinyu (Journalism, Fudan University), Guobin Yang (Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures, Barnard College), and Zhang Zhen (Cinema Studies, New York University) will explore the films featured in this series, the rise of the documentary form in contemporary China, and the social issues
addressed in the films.

Introduction by director Li Yifan

Before the Flood tells the story of the 2002 evacuation and relocation of Fengjie county in advance of the release of the first floodwaters for the Three Gorges Dam. Seen through the eyes of Fengjie residents including a local innkeeper and the government cadres responsible for the relocation, the film recounts the human side of this massive engineering project.

About the Directors:
A native of Chongqing, Li Yifan studied at the Central Drama Institute in Beijing from 1986-1991. After working in advertising in Guangzhou for several years, Li shifted to writing and served as editor-in-chief of a local Chongqing newspaper. Also from Chongqing, Yan Yu worked as a photojournalist for ahe Chongqing television station for four years before working as a photographer for documentaries and advertising. In 2001 Li
and Yan founded the FanYu Documentary Studio. Before the Flood is their first feature film.

Introduction by director Hu Xinyu

The Man tells the story of the daily lives of three bachelors in the northern industrial city of Taiyuan. By showing the three men drinking beer, watching television, and talking about their feelings, the filmmaker captures the boredom, confusion, and frustration young men face in contemporary China.

Q&A with director Hu Xinyu will immediately follow the film.

About the Filmmaker:
Hu Xinyu, an independent film producer, was born in 1969. The Man is his first full-length documentary film. The Man has been screened at the 17 th Singapore International Film Festival (2004), the Fifth Shadow Film Festival in Amsterdam (2004), and the 2004 Les Ecrans documentary festival
in Paris.

Introduction by director Huang Weikai

Yang is a drifter from Henan who plays his guitar on the streets of Guangzhou for spare change. As he approaches 30, he recognizes that he may
never realize his dream of becoming a pop star. His days are spent chasing off competitors and running away from security guards and city inspectors. His love life is a mess, and day by day he grows more depressed and numb. The film follows Yang?s moods and life as he floats through his existence.

Q&A with director Huang Weikai will immediately follow the film.

About the Director:
Born in Guangdong in 1972, Huang Weikai graduated from the Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy with a degree in Chinese Painting in 1995. He has been an independent filmmaker since 2002.
