Director’s Note
As a young Chinese movie director who recently graduated from the Beijing Film Academy, I truly enjoy filmmaking as my profession and, ever since graduation, have focused on creating my own film script,
hoping to complete my first independent film production as soon as possible.
During the creative process I have been touched by many people and situations, among which one character has particularly piqued my interest. Through my continuous contact with him I feel my understanding
of him as a person has enriched my own life experiences and heightened my sensitivity to the human condition. Moreover, my understanding and contact with this person’s community has enhanced my understanding of their lifestyle and, for that matter,
respect for lifestyles of all. As a result, after more than one year of interviews and follow-ups, I have completed a documentary film – the first independently produced film of my career.
The central figure of this documentary is Meimei, a cross-dressing male actor with a strong identity for the opposite sex – one whose such desire is the strongest of all I have met to date. Due to financial
difficulties and health reasons Meimei is unable to perform a sex change surgery to begin a new life. Instead he can only attempt to search for love and happiness among homosexuals and transvestites. In 2004 Meimei finally met a man of his love who
also accepts Meimei as is. They had a public ceremonious wedding, which touched many close friends. Everyone present had deeply felt the urge to share in their happy life together, though all also harbored doubts and prayed that such happiness would
last.
On the other hand, Meimei is filled confidence about his marriage. His friends hosted a farewell concert for the gay community, at which seven years of performance and Meimei’s poise and performing skills
won respect and praise from all. Along with the farewell concert, Meimei gave up the stability of a life attained as a result of many years of hard work in Beijing. He prepared to go to Shanghai, a new city, to initiate a new life. But things did not
turn out to be as planned, as the brief marriage was not happy at all. He came back to Beijing soon, embarrassed when running into old friends, but also falling into worse financial strait than before.
I came to know Meimei as a kind-hearted individual whose pure devotion and sincere thirst for love always lead to emotional wounds with every relationship.
During the filmmaking, Meimei and I evolved from curious stranger initially to brothers-like friends. I also came to understand transvestite males as a group who from childhood on desire to be girls deep
inside. Due to various pressure from life, discrimination from family and friends and an unwillingness to sacrifice their career and the ability to make a living, most of them can only release their desires deep within through cross-dressing
performances. They hope to initiate their own lives with a new identity but also recognize the inherent difficulties and problems. I hope that through this film more people will come to feel their deep pain as my team and I have, so as to understand
and accept them as who they are, and accept such lifestyle as is. We also most sincerely hope that through our film, this group of individuals also obtains the kind of support needed to build a new life.
Your Honorable Chairman and the Organizing Committee of the Film Festival, the production of this documentary has instilled in me passion towards documentary production. Creating a documentary is not only
an artistic creation in itself but also an emotional jorney for humanity and human rights. I sincerely hope to be able to participate in this Film Festival and learn from the critiques of my professional peers for this piece of work. Of course, I
also look forward to the opportunity to sharing with others the emotion I experienced with this filmmaking..
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Tian Gao
